About Wilmington

Wilmington is Delaware’s largest city and an important transportation and cultural center in the Mid-Atlantic. Situated where the Christina River meets the Brandywine Creek, the city has long served as a crossroads for trade, industry, and travel along the Northeast Corridor. Today, Wilmington combines historic neighborhoods, a revitalized riverfront district, and an expanding network of parks and trails that connect the city to regional greenways and waterfront landscapes. Its central location between Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the Delaware Bay makes Wilmington a natural waypoint for long-distance trail users traveling through the Mid-Atlantic.

Trail Access

In Wilmington, the 9/11 National Memorial Trail travels through the city along the Christina River corridor, linking Delaware’s trail network with routes extending north toward Pennsylvania and south toward Maryland. Entering Wilmington from the north, the route connects with segments of the East Coast Greenway, using river-adjacent paths and urban trail corridors that guide trail users through the city’s parks and waterfront districts. Through downtown and the riverfront, the memorial trail overlaps with portions of the Jack A. Markell Trail and connected riverwalk paths along the Christina River, providing a continuous off-road corridor between the Wilmington Riverfront and surrounding communities. Departing the city, the route continues south toward New Castle and the Delaware Bay while remaining connected to the broader regional trail system.
