Virginia Presents $160,000 to Support the 9/11 National Memorial Trail Alliance

General

State funding will expand education, outreach, and signage while supporting the Alliance’s long-term growth.

On September 8, 2026, the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance marked an important investment in its future with a ceremonial check presentation of $160,000 in Virginia state funding at the James J. McCoart Administration Building in Woodbridge.

Delegate Briana Sewell (opens in new window) sponsored the appropriation, included in Virginia’s fiscal year 2027 budget, with strong support from Delegate Luke Torian (opens in new window). The presentation recognized their efforts alongside David Brickley, the Alliance’s Founder and President Emeritus, who represented Prince William County in the Virginia House of Delegates for 22 years.

Coming just days before the 25th anniversary of September 11, the investment supports the Alliance’s work to preserve the memories of those lost and educate future generations. Funding will strengthen the organization’s long-term capacity, expand education and outreach, and support interpretive and wayfinding signage at strategic locations along the Trail.

For the Alliance, which was founded in Prince William County, the presentation also reflected a meaningful connection to its roots. The McCoart Government Center is home to the Prince William County Liberty Memorial, dedicated to the 22 county residents who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

The 1,500+ mile 9/11 National Memorial Trail connects the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, and Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Virginia’s support will help make this living tribute more accessible and recognizable, giving more people opportunities to remember, learn, and explore.

"The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a ‘Trail of Remembrance’ to honor those Heroes of 9/11,” said David Brickley. “This funding will be invaluable in keeping their memories alive and reaffirms the greatness of this country.”

The Alliance extends its sincere gratitude to Delegate Sewell and Delegate Torian for their leadership and to the Commonwealth of Virginia for investing in the Trail’s future. As we commemorate 25 years since September 11, this support helps carry our mission forward for generations.
