About Newton

Newton is the county seat of Sussex County and a historic small town located in the Kittatinny Valley of northwestern New Jersey. Established in the 18th century, Newton developed as a regional center for agriculture, commerce, and government serving the surrounding rural communities. Today, its compact downtown—anchored by the Sussex County Courthouse and the shops and cafés of Spring Street—offers a walkable setting that blends historic architecture with modern community life. Surrounded by farmland, forests, and the nearby Kittatinny Valley State Park, Newton provides easy access to outdoor recreation and scenic landscapes while remaining a central hub for services in Sussex County.

Trail Access

In Newton, the 9/11 National Memorial Trail passes through the rural landscapes of northwestern New Jersey as it connects communities between the Delaware River corridor and the interior of Sussex County. Approaching from the north, the route travels south along a network of local roads and regional cycling corridors before entering Newton near the town center. Within the borough, the memorial trail follows streets that connect directly with the downtown district and local services. From Newton, the route continues south through Sussex County toward the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, linking the town with the Delaware River corridor and other trail communities along the broader memorial trail network.
