About Johnstown

Johnstown is a historic city in southwestern Pennsylvania located at the confluence of the Conemaugh River and Stonycreek River. Surrounded by the forested ridges of the Allegheny Mountains, the city developed as a major center of steel production and transportation during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Johnstown is widely known for its resilience following the devastating Johnstown Flood, an event commemorated at the nearby Johnstown Flood National Memorial. The city’s historic downtown, riverfront parks, and surrounding mountain landscapes now serve as gateways for outdoor recreation and regional trail travel across western Pennsylvania.

Trail Access

In Johnstown, the 9/11 National Memorial Trail passes through the Allegheny Mountain region as it connects the Flight 93 National Memorial with communities across southwestern Pennsylvania. Approaching from the north, the route follows a combination of regional roads and trail corridors into the Johnstown area. Within the city, the memorial trail connects with segments of the Path of the Flood Trail, a multi-use trail that follows the historic route of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club dam failure associated with the Johnstown Flood. This trail provides a scenic corridor linking Johnstown with surrounding communities while offering direct access to parks and services in the downtown area. Departing Johnstown, the route continues south and east through the Allegheny Highlands toward the Flight 93 National Memorial, forming one of the most meaningful segments of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail in Pennsylvania.
