About New Brunswick

New Brunswick is a historic river city in central New Jersey, located along the banks of the Raritan River and home to Rutgers University, the state’s flagship public research institution. Founded in the late 17th century, New Brunswick has long served as a regional transportation, education, and cultural hub. Today, the city offers a dense mix of academic campuses, medical centers, cultural venues, and riverfront access. Its walkable downtown, extensive transit connections, and location along established regional corridors make New Brunswick an important waypoint for long-distance trail users traveling through central New Jersey.

Trail Access

In New Brunswick, the 9/11 National Memorial Trail follows the Raritan River corridor through central New Jersey. Approaching from the southwest, the route utilizes sections of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park towpath, providing a continuous, multi-use trail connection through canal towns and river landscapes. Entering the city, the trail transitions onto city streets and river-adjacent paths near Rutgers University, crossing the Raritan River via the Landing Lane Bridge to reach downtown New Brunswick. From there, the route continues northeast through Middlesex County along a combination of bike-friendly roads and shared-use paths, linking communities along the Raritan River and Raritan Bay corridor as it progresses toward northern New Jersey and ultimately New York City.
