About Jersey City

Jersey City (population 292,449) is the most ethnically diverse city in the United States, with over 40 languages spoken and 42.5% of residents born outside the U.S. Located directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan, Jersey City offers stunning waterfront views and serves as a vital connection point on the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. The city is home to Liberty State Park, the most visited New Jersey state park with approximately 4.5 million annual visitors, offering direct views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline.

9/11 Connection

Jersey City lost 39 residents in the 9/11 attacks and played a critical role during the tragedy—the waterfront served as a triage center during the '9/11 boatlift' when thousands evacuated Manhattan via ferry and were decontaminated and treated by EMS. Jersey City first responders participated in rescue operations at Ground Zero, many still suffering from 9/11-related illnesses.

The city is home to two major memorials: the Empty Sky Memorial in Liberty State Park (New Jersey's official state memorial) honors 749 New Jersey residents who lost their lives, with names engraved on two 30-foot high, 210-foot long stainless steel walls matching the World Trade Center tower width, with a direct sight line to the former WTC site. The Jersey City 9/11 Memorial at the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway features six steel girders from the original WTC welded into the letter "A" for America.

Trail Access

The 9/11 National Memorial Trail follows the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway through Jersey City, a spectacular 21.6-mile pathway on the western shore of the Hudson River. The trail starts at Liberty State Park (intersection of Morris Pesin Drive and Freedom Way) and runs north along the scenic waterfront, passing both the Empty Sky Memorial and the Jersey City 9/11 Memorial. The walkway offers spectacular NYC skyline views, connects to the East Coast Greenway, and features free 24/7 public access for biking, walking, and jogging.
