About Gettysburg
Gettysburg (population 7,106) is internationally renowned as the site of the Civil War's deadliest battle (July 1-3, 1863) with over 50,000 casualties. President Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address here on November 19, 1863. Today, Gettysburg National Military Park welcomes 3.5 million visitors annually to explore this hallowed ground where the nation's commitment to freedom and sacrifice was forever enshrined.
9/11 Connection
The 9/11 National Memorial Trail was deliberately routed through Gettysburg rather than taking a direct path, creating a profound thematic connection between two defining American moments. Both sites represent places where Americans gave their lives for the nation—the Civil War battlefield that preserved the Union and the modern sites where Americans fought terrorism. The trail serves as a "secular pilgrimage" honoring sacrifice and resilience across different periods of American history, linking the nation-building of 1863 with the national resolve following September 11, 2001.
Trail Access
The trail enters Gettysburg via Mummasburg Road and West Lincoln Avenue, passes through historic Lincoln Square in the town center, and exits via Biglerville Road. The route provides direct access to Gettysburg National Military Park, with park roads open daily from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
