Take Action Opportunity: Hit-and-Run Legislation Alert
Senator Simonaire of Anne Arundel has two pieces of legislation this session tackling the issue of hit-and-runs.
- The first bill, SB 0086 – Yellow Alert Program, would create an alert system, much like the Amber Alert and Silver Alert, for instances when there is a hit-and-run where the driver should have known it could have ended with a fatality and identifying information about the offending vehicle is also known. A similar alert system is already state law in Colorado, and has been used in Aurora and Denver for a couple of years. Out of seventeen alerts in Denver, thirteen have been solved. This legislation is an important tool for the quick apprehension of drivers who flee the scene.
- The second bill, SB 0084, increases the penalties for failing to remain at the scene from 10 years to 15 years.
If you would like to testify on either of these bills please contact his office at (410)-841-3658 on or before Wednesday February 4th.
Plan to testify on these or other bills? See the General Assembly’s guidelines for attending a committee hearing.
